The first academy event of the season showed promising signs for a positive season ahead with all teams performing well leading to 3 grand final appearances. Our entire male side of the academy progressed to the knockout rounds for the first time in club history.
Read how our teams went below.
U12 Boys
First tournament for our U12 Boys and they didn’t disappoint. Started the tournament off with 2 strong wins and finished the group stage in 2nd. They faced a strong Carina team in the quarter finals and that was where their tournament ended. A positive way to gain valuable academy experience.
Position: Quarter Finalists
U13 Boys
Similar to the U12 Boys team as they started the tournament with a bang. After the first two games they had a goal difference of +15. They finished 2nd in the group and won their quarter final 3-0 against a higher ranked team. The semi final was the end of their tournament being defeated by a strong Carina team who we defeated in last years GCI Grand Final.
Position: Semi Finalists
U13 Girls
Our U13 girls first exposure to academy league were placed in a hard group with Feenix topping the group undefeated. The girls played really well winning three of their five group games and scoring 17 goals. A positive start for the girls ahead of a promising academy league season.
Position: 3rd in Pool B
U14 Boys
Entering the tournament understrength missing almost half the team but they managed to win their opening two fixtures. We finished second in the group and were eliminated in the Elimination Final after battling to the final minutes. A team to watch as they regain squad members heading into the academy league season.
Position: Quarter Finalists
U15 Boys
After making the GCI Grand Final in January, the boys kept the momentum going navigating the group stage undefeated. Topping the group by four points we faced Force in the semi final, winning 5-3. This set up a repeated final from January and we eventually fell 7-4 to a strong Crusaders side. The boys have found their feet in the academy set up and will be a team to watch this season.
Position: Runners Up
U15 Girls
The U15 Girls team faced some really strong opposition throughout the group stage. They won 2 of the 5 games and finished 5th in their pool. A good learning experience for the team ahead of the academy league season.
Position: 5th in Pool B
U16 Boys
The U16 Boys found themselves in a tricky group with Crusaders who we faced in all 3 major finals last season. We started the tournament off with a cruisy win before falling 6-5 to Crusaders. We then drew with Ipswich meaning the final group fixture was a must win with goal difference. We did it with ease, defeating Dynamo 15-0. We entered the semi final with 6 fit players and won it 7-4 in extra time before falling to familiar opponents in Crusaders 5-3 in the grand final.
Position: Runners Up
Youth Men
A somewhat new look Youth Men side for us entered this tournament with an unknown sense of belonging. After Day 1 we were with two wins against strong opposition. We were defeated by Feenix meaning we had a must win to get out of the group against Ipswich Revolution. A 5-4 win placed us top of the group and due to a forfeit in the semi finals we progressed direct to the grand final. We faced familiar opponents in Sunshine Coast Wave and were convincingly defeated by a strong team 5-1.
Position: Runners Up
Youth Women
Our Youth Women battled over the three days in a one pool age group. Their opening three games were always going to be tricky but the girls stayed in the game until the end on all three occasions. We picked up 4 points after a draw with Crusaders and a win over Ferrum 5 Futsal to round out the tournament.
Position: 5th overall
Following the tournament, club Academy Director, Daniel D’Allessandro was pleased with our teams’ performances commenting, “we’ve had a great start to the season at State Titles. Very promising and encouraging as we enter the league phase of the season. Having all of our male teams reach the play-offs is a good baseline. Also good to get 4-5 games of futsal into the legs.”
Our attention not shifts towards the FQ Youth League (starts Monday 6 October) and the FQ Academy League (starts Saturday 11 October).
