REVIEW: 2025 F-League RD5

Our men’s team tasted defeat for the first time this season after an end to end match against Sunshine Coast Wave in Nambour on Sunday went the way of the hosts.

The game started with high intensity and plenty of possession as we picked up where we left off against Fury last week and had a real focus on attacking. The attacking dominance was rewarded as Orlando Lopez found the back of the net twice at the end of well constructed attacks.

With the score at 2-1 and River City maintaining high levels of possession and chances, Wave were gifted a goal which swung momentum rapidly. As the River City player held possession, a clear pull on his collar from behind in front of the official was somehow missed by the referee and resulted in a 1 on 1, which levelled the scores.

We found the back of the net a third time through another direct attack but a mix of questionable decisions and poor defensive set up meant we entered halftime at 4-3 down.

The second half saw Wave play with high intensity and very fast transition speed. The young players for Wave showed their talent as they were relentlessly driving with the ball and being rewarded.

For the first 10 minutes of the second half, both teams traded attacks while we had the more possession, Wave were far more clinical. Although we stayed in the game and had the chances, the Sunshine Coast keeper made 4 or 5 saves that consolidated their lead in crucial moments.

In the end we fell to our first defeat of the 2025 campaign at the hands of a well drilled and very deep Sunshine Coast Wave side.

Our women’s team again stayed in the game and competed for the first half, but fell to a loss at the hands of a strong Wave side. The Wave keeper was on her game and prevented us from finding the back of the net multiple times, on the defensive end Wave were too strong and found the back of the net 5 times.
